Description:
This offering contains the actual "Outstanding Achievement Award" given to Jim Thorpe by the Associated Press for being the greatest athlete of the first half century in 1950. This very prestigious award has been signed by United States Attorney General J. Howard McGrath as well as the owner/publisher of the Washington Post Phillip Graham.
Jim Thorpe achieved excellence in any sport he desired whether it is football, baseball, basketball, track and field or lacrosse. He gained fame by bringing home Gold Medals in the Pentathlon and Decathlon at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden. His favorite sport was football. He led the Carlisle Indians to the college football championship over Dwight Eisenhower's West Point squad 27-6 while playing running back, defensive back, placekicker and punter. Thorpe scored 25 TD's in 1912 earning All American honors. This is a very special award given to the greatest athlete of the first half century.
